How to create video content for a product launch

Create Compelling Video Content for your Product Launch

Your team’s been working hard.  Now it’s time to share the fruits of everyone’s labor with the world.  There’s nothing more exciting than a new product launch and videos are a great way to make sure that everyone shares your excitement.

As part of your product marketing strategy, video launches need to have the same TLC as the product launch itself.  Do it wrong and people won’t be reached.

Do it right, and you’ll give people a reason to care.

Videos have been proven to be effective tools for communicating your product and brand story.

So, how do you create video content that makes a product launch stand out?

Here are a few things to chew on.

1) The Product Story is at the heart of your Product Video

During our kickoff meetings, we always ask our clients a simple question:

What makes your product memorable?

Every product has a story. Perhaps it solves a problem or introduces a completely new technology. Or maybe it takes something we all know and makes it better.

The challenge is sharing that story in 90 seconds.

The initial product launch video’s goal is to pique interest.  It shouldn’t try to communicate every feature, benefit, and technical detail at once.  That can come later.  To start, narrow down the main story – the most intriguing heart of what your product is or does and communicate that in the video.

Once you establish that central story, you can build a creative concept around it.

2) The Hero Video will take the Lead

First impressions matter and your hero video will lead the way.

Be creative.  Focus on the central message.  Be memorable.  Your hero video is at the front and everyone needs to know your product’s arrived.

Depending on the product and audience, your hero video might take several different approaches:

  • Product-focused: Showcase the design, features, and functionality through beautiful product cinematography and dynamic camera movement.
  • Story-driven: Build a narrative around a character, a problem, or a relatable experience that demonstrates why the product matters.
  • Lifestyle-oriented: Show the product in action, connecting its features to the way people live, work, or interact with the world.
  • Technology-driven: Use motion graphics, animation, and visual effects to explain complex technology or bring abstract concepts to life.

The best approach depends on what you’re launching and who you’re trying to reach.

For example, when we do new product videos for Samsung, we focus on the people and the problems that their innovative products solve for them.  When we produced launch videos for tech companies like Gong or Mindtickle, we centered the video on how easy and unintrusive it is to use the product.

We also produced a smart watch commercial for kids.  The video had to showcase how the new watch connected parents and kids even when they weren’t close to each other.

The goal is to create something that makes people stop scrolling and want to learn more.

3) Products are all about Action

A product is alive and action-packed.  It’s not a talking-head ho-hum nap-fest.  It’s an action film.

Whether it’s a physical or digital product, potential clients want to see how the product works and what makes it useful.

This demonstration video is different than the hero video.  It dives deeper into the product’s features.

The demo can be live-action or animated.  The key is to clearly and economically show the key features and how it all works.

For live action demos, creative camera work, editing, and visual storytelling will make a difference.

Close-ups can highlight important design details. Camera movement can create energy and reveal features in unexpected ways. Motion graphics and UI overlays can help explain functionality without interrupting the flow of the story.

A well-crafted product video balances technical information with visual appeal, giving viewers a clear understanding of what the product does while keeping them engaged.

4) Produce several Product Launch Video Assets

A series of videos will keep your audience hooked and engaged.  It also makes sense budget-wise – you can shoot several videos on one day, and for animated videos, use the same creative direction and style developed for a series of videos.

From the beginning, definitely think beyond a single hero video.

Here are ideas for the different type of videos to produce for your product launch campaign.

Video content Purpose
Teaser video Build anticipation before the launch
Hero launch video Introduce the product and its key benefits
Product demo Show how the product works
Feature videos Highlight individual features or capabilities
Social media videos Create short, engaging content for different platforms
Customer testimonial Build credibility through real-world experiences
Behind-the-scenes content Give audiences a closer look at the product or development process

5) Tailor Your Video Content to Each Platform

Where your audience watches your videos matters just as much as what you’re showing them.

A product launch video on your website may need to communicate more information than a short social media video designed to capture attention in a crowded feed.

Consider how your content will be used across different channels:

Website: Create a polished hero video that quickly communicates the product’s value and encourages visitors to explore further.

YouTube: Use longer-form product videos, demonstrations, and explainers to provide more detail for viewers actively researching your product.

LinkedIn: Focus on the business value of your product, particularly for B2B launches. Keep the messaging clear and relevant to your audience.

Instagram, TikTok, and other social platforms: Create shorter, visually engaging videos that capture attention quickly. Consider vertical formats, captions, and creative hooks that work without sound.

Rather than simply resizing the same video for every platform, consider how the creative approach, pacing, and messaging can be adapted to each audience.

6) Follow a Launch Timeline for your Product Videos

Timing is everything.

Sometimes the launch date may be in flux, but you can still set milestones that make sense for your product launch videos.

On-board your video production team early – they can help set timelines and create a realistic picture of what’s possible.

A product launch video timeline might look something like this:

  • Pre-production: Develop the creative concept, script, storyboard, and production plan.
  • Production: Film the product, lifestyle scenarios, interviews, or other necessary footage.
  • Post-production: Edit the hero video, develop motion graphics, refine the messaging, and create additional versions.
  • Pre-launch: Release teaser content and build anticipation.
  • Launch day: Publish the hero video and supporting promotional content.
  • Post-launch: Continue sharing feature videos, demonstrations, and other content that keeps the conversation going.

There are of course variables and no product launch is the same.  But establishing a timeline early will help with audience engagement and drive results.
