Case Study: Commercial for Kids’ Smart Watch

Tick Talk Tech needed a video to promote the launch of its new Tick Talk 6 smart watch.  Having produced several videos over the years for their earlier models, they had a clear direction of what they wanted the video to look like and what they wanted to avoid.

They came to us with a comprehensive playbook for the video, but also wanted us to infuse our creativity into the project as well.

Here’s how we made it happen.

The video needed to focus on the product

Tick Talk 6 is a smart watch for kids and we needed to show how it can be an integral part of a kid’s day.  With these types of products, it’s very easy to forget that we’re selling a product and focus too much on the lifestyle.

In order to showcase the smart watch, and at the same time, show how it integrates into the day in the life of a child, we had to strike an efficient balance.  With whip pans, deliberate zooms and creative editing, we demonstrated the look and functionality of the device while still telling a child’s story.

The product’s functions had to be showcased

Tick Talk 6 has a lot of amazing functions, and we had to demonstrate it all in under 3 minutes.  We had already planned on separate videos that got into the weeds of each function, so the hero video simply had to mention them, but because of the number of functions that we needed to showcase, the video had to be efficient and creative.

As mentioned above, we had to tell a story of how the watch is integral to a child’s lifestyle.  We used this framework to move between scenarios to showcase each of the functions.  The script organically developed around each of the functions.

Location, Props and Wardrobe increased the product’s appeal

The amazing marketing team at Tick Talk had a clear vision of how they wanted everything to look.  We put together a wardrobe and props package to ensure that all of our cast and sets had the right look.

For the location, we focused on a modern house with both spacious exterior and interior options.  It also had to be close to a park where some of the scenes would be shot.

After an extensive search, we settled on a house in Newport Beach.

The actors needed to be diverse and multi-talented

Fortunately, shooting in Southern California provided many talented actors to choose from.  We needed several toddlers and a couple adults.  We needed diversity and at least one child who could dance K-pop.  We exclusively used Casting Networks and had hundreds of talented actors to choose from.  The greatest strength of the video came from the talented cast.

When it all came together, we had an upbeat, high-energy commercial that checked all the boxes in promoting the product.
