Product Commercials that really work

A good product video will make your awesome product look more awesome.  It’ll do it with memorable storytelling, creative camera work, and nifty editing.  With the right combination of creative ideation and technical execution, your product commercial will stand out and leave a lasting impact.

Below are a couple of examples of product commercials that knock it out of the park.

Grind Commercial

It’s a coffee pod.  That’s it.  There are other coffee pods out there, but this one has a special commercial.

What works:

  • Storytelling
  • Camera Movement
  • Pacing

Storytelling

The spot masterfully tells a story that includes the product’s key features and services.  The Grind pods come in the mail.  Our hero opens the cool container and easily pops a pod into the coffee maker.  Within minutes, he’s got world-class gourmet coffee that rivals any barista’s creation.

Camera Movement

The correlation between his home and the café is creatively told through whip-pans.  We transition from his home to the café and to the people in the café to demonstrate how this home-brewed coffee can recreate the taste and atmosphere of one of Grind’s hip joints.

Pacing

Fast editing helps pack a lot into 30 seconds, but it does more than that—it keeps us engaged.

We don’t linger on shots that don’t matter. Hot, steaming coffee. The café. The people. The design. Everything moves quickly, giving the spot a kinetic quality that keeps our attention.

Playdate

This is a longer spot that only works because it’s engaging.  A 2-minute commercial is risky – can you sustain a person’s interest that long?  This one definitely does:

What works:

  • Strong Intro
  • Editing
  • Product Shots and Graphics

Strong Intro

The first 10 seconds of the video is genius.  We are quickly introduced to the product – a portable gaming device.  But is it just another gaming device?  Why do we need one in this age of the smartphone?

But wait, there’s a crank!  Huh?

All of this happens in the first 10 seconds and our interest in instantly piqued.

Editing

There are some weird talking head inserts to who we assume is the founder of Playdate, but it works because the video is a bit quirky and he’s a bit quirky.  It also moves fast and the cuts are tight and intentional.  We get everything we need and more.

Product Shots and Graphics

The product is always the star.

It’s shot in interesting ways with a little animated help.  At the end, we can also feel what Playdate feels like to hold and play.

Do all product commercials have to be creative?  Not necessarily.  But to leave a lasting impression, they should capture your audience’s imagination.  This needs to be done with both creative concepting and technical execution.
